Seiko presents a watch inspired by the “Red Special” guitar that Brian May and his father built in the early 1960s.
Seiko presents a limited edition version along with guitarist Brian May, considered one of the greatest and most original guitarists in history. Throughout his long and constant career, rock legend Brian May has relied on his guitar "Red Special" to create the sound that helped make Queen one of the most admired and celebrated rock bands in the world.
The "Red Special" Seiko 5 Sports SRPE83K1 that we have here, is based on the famous May guitar of the same name. As Queen fans know, this is not an ordinary guitar. Brian May with the help of his father, built the guitar by hand and with hand tools in the early 60s. The neck was carved in the wood of an old fireplace, 100 years old at the time. The body was made of pressed wood with an old oak insert and covered with a mahogany veneer that Brian stained and polished almost 60 years ago. The innovative tremolo system designed by Brian featured a hand-carved tempered steel tilting plate that turned on the edge of a blade, with the pull of the ropes balanced by the motorcycle valve springs. This guitar has accompanied May throughout his musical career and has become his personal hallmark.
The Red Special Seiko 5, although manufactured very differently from the guitar, is also made to last. It stands out for the design of its sphere inspired by the "Red Special". It has the same red / black color scheme similar to the wood of the guitar body, giving it a unique and asymmetrical touch that makes it different from any other watch. The watch comes in a presentation box that looks like a guitar case and inside this box we also find a commemorative coin that is based on the six-pence piece that he has used throughout his career as a pick. The nylon watch strap is inspired by May's guitar strap.
Technically speaking this model assembles the automatic 4R36 caliber, the same one that mounts the Seiko Tortuga PADI and other emblematic models of the brand and what a good result it is giving. Its robust steel casing makes it 100 meters waterproof, the glass is Hardlex and it has all the qualities that have made Seiko 5 Sports so many followers over the decades.
Although perhaps less known, another object that has traveled the world with Brian May is his Seiko diving watch, which he bought during his first tour of Japan in the 70s and has been wearing it for more than 40 years.
Seiko thanks Brian for the opportunity to celebrate his creativity and music with this Seiko 5 Sports watch. Brian commented:
“I am delighted to see this watch come to life, and proud that the creation of my father and mine so many years ago has inspired this collaboration. I am in love with my Seiko and it has served me well for many years. I will wear this new watch with pride. ”
This Red Special edition of the Seiko 5 Sports watch, signed on its transparent background by Brian May, is limited to 9,000 units
